Following Disney’s acquisition of 20th Century Fox, comic book and superhero fans were thrilled by the prospects of adding a character like Deadpool into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The first two Deadpool flicks took proper advantage of their R-rated content. On the other hand, Disney is notorious for its strict PG-13 environment. This is why some audiences showed their concerns about the possibility of Merc with the Mouth becoming a family-friendly guy rather than a wisecracking mercenary who loves slaughtering bad guys. But they do not have to worry about this scenario as Karan Soni, who plays Dopinder, has confirmed that the upcoming Deadpool instalment will have a ‘Hard R’ rating.
Soni recently had an interview with ComicBook.com, discussing Deadpool 3 in detail. According to him, fans should not worry about Disney imposing restrictions on the film’s content.
“I have begun working on that one, so I can say that it is the same as the other two. It’s like hard R. There’s a lot of that stuff. So it does not feel different,” Soni said. “The only thing that, for me, is different is that I have not gotten the script this time. The other two, we did get it, it’s a big difference, at least for me, the MCU part of it vs. the Fox/Marvel part of it. They’re so strict. So I’ve only seen glimpses of what I’m in.”
The thing that stands out in Disney’s acquisition of Fox is that the former studio has maintained a separate studio for Fox, 20th Century Studios, allowing it to release R-rated projects. The Deadpool franchise has been R-rated right from the get-go. And it looks like Disney will continue this trend as well. It will be intriguing to see how a character like Deadpool fits into the world of the MCU.
Helmed by Shawn Levy, Deadpool 3 stars Ryan Reynolds, Morena Baccarin, Brianna Hildebrand, Karan Soni, and more. The film will also mark the return of Hugh Jackman as Wolverine. It will come out on May 3, 2024, as part of the MCU’s Phase Five. Stay tuned for more updates.
