After the mammoth success of a few films in South India, the divide between North Indian and South Indian films seems to be blurring day by day. It is true at least in the North Indian market that has accepted South Indian content with open arms.
When it comes to OTT, the effect is visible as many streaming platforms have brought us original South Indian series. But, not Netflix. There is still no series on Netflix India that is originally in any South Indian language.
Binged has pointed it out several times and we still think that representation of different languages only helps in diversifying the content which is always a great idea. Regardless, fans of original South Indian content must leave any bit of hope because Netflix is not making any series from the South for at least next year. We are not saying it, the top-tier leaders at Netflix India said that themselves.
Tanya Bami, the series head at Netflix said “We are working with creators from the south who are developing titles for us for the Hindi market.”
Imagine, Netflix is ready to work with South Folks but only for Hindi content, just like Rana Naidu. To the same question, Monica Shergill added, “The lack of series in languages down south, across streaming platforms, is also a function of the popularity of the film format with creators and audiences. Anthologies are easier to do because they are smaller films; a continuous story or franchise-building is a different thing. But we are also seeing more and more creators from the south realise the power of long-format storytelling.”
So, Netflix India is ready to bring anthologies, Hindi series and so much more but not original South Indian series.
