Delhi HC May Ban Drama Based on This Gangster Before Release

The Delhi High Court has issued a notice on a plea seeking a ban on the upcoming web series UP 77, which is reportedly based on the life of gangster Vikas Dubey. The petition was filed just days before the series was scheduled to release on December 25, 2025, on Waves OTT.

The matter was taken up by Justice Sachin Datta, who issued notices to the Union government and the producers of the series. The case will be heard on Wednesday. The plea has been filed by Vikas Dubey’s widow, Richa, under Article 226 of the Constitution and is being represented by Advocate Azra Khan.

The petitioner has asked the court to halt the certification, release, streaming, promotion, and exhibition of UP 77. She has alleged that the makers never sought her written, oral, or implied consent to portray identifiable characters, names, relationships, and incidents connected to her and her family.

According to the plea, the series sensationalises and fictionalises deeply private aspects of her life, including events inside the marital home and developments after her husband’s death. It argues that this amounts to a serious violation of her privacy, dignity, and reputation, which are protected under Article 21 of the Constitution.

The case has drawn attention as the series is set to stream on Waves OTT, a platform owned by the Government of India. Despite this, the show has come under legal scrutiny even before its release. As of now, there is no final order banning the series, and the court’s decision is awaited.
