Demon Slayer Continues To Crush Japan Box Office, Eyeing Top Spot!!

The Demon Slayer hype is real, as ‘Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba the Movie: Mugen Train’ continues to “slay” (sorry about the pun, if it is bad) in the Japanese Box Office. ‘Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba the Movie: Mugen Train’ was the fastest film to cross both 100 million USD and 200 million USD milestones in the Japanese Box Office history, and it is now looking ready to take the fastest 300 million USD milestone as well (to be fair, only one film has crossed 300 million USD in the history of the Japanese Box Office ever.

Hayao Miyazaki’s Academy Award winning masterpiece ‘Spirited Away’ is currently holding the top spot for the most money earned by a feature film in the box office. But we think by Feb – March, the Japanese Box Office will have a new “Numero Uno” at the top of the Box Office List. With the film set to release in the bigger markets like the U.S. and India next year, we are expecting this animated feature to sail past ‘Your Name’ and ‘Spirited Away’ as the highest grossing Japanese film, around the globe.

The ‘Demon Slayer’ got a recent popularity boost, with the final volume of the manga (meaning: comic book) series getting dropped this week. With over 120 million paper and digital copies of the entire series sold, ‘Demon Slayer’ is expected to create a positive economic impact in the Japanese economy of just over 1.9 billion USD. As it stands, the film has grossed over 270 million in USD in the Japanese Box Office and over 285 million USD overall.

‘Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba the Movie: Mugen Train’ is set right after the first season of ‘Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba’. The story follows protagonist Kamado Tanjiro and his sister Kamado Nezuko as they try to find a cure for Nezuko’s demon curse. The animated television series is set in Taisho-era Japan.

‘Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba’, the web series is currently streaming on Netflix. The film, ‘Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba the Movie: Mugen Train’ is expected to release next year in India.
