Denis Villeneuve Believes Cast of ‘Dune: Part Two’ Will Save Cinema

The second of the two-part on-screen adaptation of Frank Herbert’s Dune novel (1965), Dune: Part Two, will arrive in the theatres worldwide on November 3. Helmed by Denis Villeneuve, the film will serve as a direct sequel to the events of Dune (2021). The director and Florence Pugh (who plays Princess Irulan) recently had an interview with Time Magazine, where they shared intriguing details about the sequel and discussed the future of cinema. Apart from taking part in the interview, Pugh also appeared on the cover page of the magazine’s June 12 edition.

Time Magazine recently chose its 2023 Next Generation Leaders, including actress Florence Pugh.

There is no doubt in admitting that the future of cinema is in grave danger. The post-pandemic era of cinema has not turned out kind for several prominent movie studios and big-budget flicks. There are so many reasons behind this scenario. One of them was, of course, the COVID-19 pandemic. Our world has changed drastically since the arrival of the pandemic. Post-lockdown, film theatres across the globe opened as if nothing had changed. They kept the same rates for tickets, popcorn, beverages, and other theatre-related essentials. It seemed like the theatre owners forgot how the COVID-19 pandemic broke the economic backbone of many countries and stole people’s jobs.

In addition, the rise of streaming platforms has made things worse for theatrical releases. According to a survey from Morning Consult, over 55% of Americans prefer streaming services over theatres for watching movies, while 50% of them believe it is too expensive for them to watch movies in theatres. We can also add people’s growing disinterest towards theatres in this scenario.

On being asked about the future of cinema, Denis Villeneuve revealed to Time Magazine that he cast Dune: Part Two while keeping the future of cinema in his mind. “I needed people who have the necessary charisma,” he said. “I think Florence, Zendaya, Timothée [Chalamet], and Austin [Butler], they will be the new power in Hollywood. These strong, charismatic figures will drag people back to the theatre.”

Villeneuve’s comments about the cast of Dune’s sequel make sense. Pugh, Chalamet, Coleman (Zendaya), and Butler are one of the hottest and most prominent performers in Hollywood right now. They have delivered exceptional performances in recent times, making them one of the top choices of big production houses. All actors have showcased remarkable versatility in their works in the last few years, nurturing their ability to tackle a wide range of genres and characters. Additionally, they have displayed a strong commitment to their craft.
