We are nearly six months from watching ‘Dune: Part Two’ in theatres, slated to release on November 3. Helmer Denis Villeneuve recently had a talk with Vanity Fair, where he shared some intriguing details about the upcoming Timothee Chalamet starrer.
Vanity Fair recently released some first-look images of the upcoming Dune instalment. During the interview, Villeneuve revealed that the film would not be a sequel. Instead, it will be a second part, serving as the continuation of the first film’s events.
Viewers watched Paul Atreides and his mother, Lady Jessica, joining hands with Chani and the rest of Fremen. He wants to take revenge on House Harkonnen, who destroyed his entire family to regain control of Arrakis, a harsh desert planet and the only place where ‘spice’ grows. Spice is a precious psychotropic mineral which allows interstellar travel and heightens the awareness and vitality of its consumers. “I wanted the movie to really open just where we left the characters. There’s no time jump. I wanted dramatic continuity with part one.”
Fans will see Paul becoming a full-fledged member of Fremen and learning their tactics to defeat House Harkonnen. He will also learn how to ride the sandworms that reside inside the sand of Arrakis’ deserts. According to Villeneuve, Paul must learn to ride these worms as Fremen treat them as half-gods, establishing a religious relationship between them.
‘Dune: Part Two’ treasures some new faces, like Austin Butler as Feyd-Rautha, the cruel prince of House Harkonnen, and Florence Pugh as Princess Irulan, the daughter of Emperor Shaddam IV, which will be played by Christopher Walken. Irulan’s father is also the ruler of the entire galaxy. The rivalry between House Atreides and House Harkonnen has alarmed the princess as she believes this scenario could result in her father losing his throne. As for Butler’s character, this is what Villeneuve said about him:
“Austin Butler brought to the screen something that would be a cross between a psychotic, sociopath serial killer and Mick Jagger.”
The forthcoming Dune project will focus primarily on the connection between Paul and Chani. The former saw the female Fremen several times before actually meeting her in Arrakis. It will be interesting to see how the director handles their bond and chemistry in the second part. Paul will look to exact vengeance on House Harkonnen, while Chani will try to protect her faction and homeworld.
Villeneuve has declared Part Two as “a war epic action movie”. He added, “I wanted to make a very human movie, very close to the characters, despite the scope of the film. I kept saying to my crew, ‘The most important thing is that spark, that relationship between both of these characters.’ If we don’t capture that, if we don’t have that onscreen, there’s no movie. The epicenter of the story is this relationship.”
Helmed by Denis Villeneuve, ‘Dune: Part Two’ will hit the theatres on November 3. It stars Timothee Chalamet, Zendaya, Rebecca Ferguson, Josh Brolin, Stellan Skarsgard, Dave Bautista, Florence Pugh, Austin Bulter, Javier Bardem, Christopher Walken, Lea Seydoux, and many more. Stay tuned for more updates.
