The much-anticipated sequel to Denis Villeneuve’s 2021 star-studded science fiction movie ‘Dune’ has just got a new theatrical release date. As per the latest update, ‘Dune Part Two’ will now be released in theatres two weeks sooner on 1st March 2024 instead of the previously announced 15th March slot. The pre-ponement has been announced following the release delay of the Ryan Gosling starrer ‘The Fall Guy’ from 15th March to 3rd May 2024.
The first film ‘Dune’ was helmed by sci-fi genre maestro Denis Villeneuve (Director – Arrival, Blade Runner 2049) and was based on Frank Herbert’s 1965 novel of the same name. Set in a distant future, the movie follows the young protagonist (played by Timothée Chalamet) and his journey to the dangerous desert planet called Arrakis aka Dune, which is known to possess the most precious substance called melange.
The first ‘Dune’ movie’s release was affected by the COVID-19 pandemic and was released concurrently in theatres alongside the HBO Max OTT platform. Despite that, the film went on to gross over $402 million at the box office globally. On the reviews front, ‘Dune’ garnered widespread appreciation from critics and audiences alike. It received 83% critics’ score on reviews aggregation website Rotten Tomatoes.
Besides the first film’s original cast including Timothée Chalamet, Rebecca Ferguson, Josh Brolin, Dave Bautista, Zendaya and Javier Bardem, its sequel ‘Dune Part Two’ will also feature new cast members namely Austin Butler, Florence Pugh, Christopher Walken, amongst others. The sequel will ostensibly carry forward the story arc of lead character Paul Atreides (played by Timothee Chalamet), who wants revenge against those who destroyed his family.
