Talking about the first blockbuster of the year, Dune Part Two achieved feats like nothing, though the film is losing certain momentum and might not reach the $1B mark, it agreed for an extended run in IMAX. Despite Godzilla vs. Kong’s wrath in the box office, Dune 2’s promising IMAX run gets them a worthy extension but now, its VOD debut is lurking on the horizon.
Its IMAX extension lasts till the 19th of April, but the VOD debut will be a hit earlier, at least for the global audience. The film hit theaters on March 1st, and for the VOD space, it will reach it on the 15th of April.
For the global audiance, it will be available on Apple, Amazon, and Google’s digital market space, with a pricetag of $29.99 for UHD and $24.96 for Blue ray version.
But why?
The question might have multiple answers, as it does look like a dumb move to release it on VOD despite its extended IMAX run, it does look disrespectful to IMAX. And especially since the dates have a gap of three days, which is too short and can easily be avoided.
The most probable answer is the early online leak of the entire film, and that too not a ‘hall-print’ but HD quality, and it’s spreading like wildfire. To tackle this, makers might have opted for this panic move, which won’t be as fruitful as it is probably too late.
But as the theatrical run is slowing down, sooner or later this would have been just the step, and as the IMAX days are countable too, a good number of people will visit theaters to witness Dune Part Two for one last time.
And as Dune Messiah is in the works, officially, the countdown begins for the third part as Paul “Muad’Dib” Atreides’ journey continues. And like any Denis Villeneuve film, stunning visuals are the bare minimum thing you can ask for.
