The makers of the popular crime television show ‘Dexter’ recently dropped a 30-second teaser trailer for the ninth and probably the last season of the show. The teaser in fact epitomizes Dexter’s character. It is uncomplicated on the outside but dark and mysterious inside.
The teaser starts off with a snowy backdrop and a bonfire. Then as the camera zooms out inside a room, we see Michael C. Hall’s beardless character standing inside and looking through a window.
Seemingly innocuous until now. But if you look carefully, you will see a vague reflection of a fidgeting body apparently wrapped inside the infamous plastic sheet, that was an integral part of Dexter’s modus operandi.
The teaser trailer ends with Dexter turning around to face us and ominously smiling while lifting his eyebrows. Although the video does not seem to be a part of the actual show, yet it signifies what’s in store for Dexter fans and that he is definitely back in form.
The show, which debuted in the year 2006, revolved around a Miami-based forensic analyst Dexter Morgan (played by Michael C. Hall), who moonlights as a vigilante serial killer of criminals, who have somehow escaped justice.
Although an acquired taste, the show was beautifully adapted from the novel ‘Darkly Dreaming Dexter’. Lead actor and cancer survivor Michael C. Hall won a truly deserved Golden Globe Award for his multi-layered performance for the show.
It is pertinent to mention here that the first four seasons of the show were immensely appreciated by the audience and critics alike. On the contrary, from the fifth season onwards, the show’s popularity abruptly went downhill.
But probably the worst part for diehard fans of the show was the eighth season, particularly its climactic revelation, which eventually resulted in the ardent enthusiasts’ demand for a revival season.
Fortunately, the pleas were heard by the makers and the show’s original showrunner Clyde Philips, who supervised the first and possibly the best four seasons, was brought back for the revival.
Regarding the show’s much-anticipated comeback, Phillips had earlier stated that “This was an opportunity to write a second finale for the show. We’re not going to betray the audience and say, ‘Whoops, that was all a dream.’ What happened in the first eight years happened in the first eight years. 10 years, or however many years, have passed by the time this will air, and the show will reflect that time passage. In so far as the ending of the show, this will have no resemblance to how the original finale was. It’s a great opportunity to write a second finale for our show, and Showtime was very gracious about that.”
The teaser trailer video finally revealed that the ninth season will be released sometime during the last quarter later this year. But the golden question still remains to be answered: ‘Will the Ninth Season of Dexter be able to redeem its lost glory?’
It may be safe to assume that with the return of Clyde Phillips and the makers’ steadfast determination for redemption, that seems quite possible. In the meanwhile, you can watch seasons 1-8 of Dexter on the Amazon Prime Video streaming platform.
