‘Dexter’ has undoubtedly been one of Showtime’s most premium shows and it seems that with its forthcoming revival season ‘Dexter: New Blood’ around the corner, the makers are all set to regain the lost glory in a fitting finale. The stakeholders of ‘Dexter: New Blood’ spilled some beans in a recent TCA (Television Critics Association) virtual press tour event.
The makers and cast members of the show revealed that the upcoming season is not about undoing the flaws of the eight-season finale, rather, it’s a new story with new characters amidst a radically different setting. Regarding his titular character, lead actor Michael C. Hall said that “He’s not in the same place he was when we left him. He’s actually cobbling together a normal life and trying to live one.”
It was also made aware that the show wouldn’t focus on Dexter’s whereabouts after between the years 2013 and 2021. Hall also stated that the reason for another season was the way the show had ended in the much-criticized eighth season. “A big part of our motivation was to definitively answer the question of what happened to this guy.” Hall had further remarked.
Showtime top brass Gary Levine had said that ‘Dexter: New Blood’ is to give “a proper finale for a brilliant series.” Although it is still not confirmed whether the ninth season would be the last or whether there could be a Dexter spin-off. Levin further stated that “We’ve always wanted to see if there was a way to do it right and it took a long time to figure out what that was and a long time for (Michael C. Hall) to be willing to revisit the role.”
‘Dexter: New Blood’ is said to comprise ten episodes and is set a decade after the events that happened in the eighth season. And the season would also bring alive (not literally) the character of Dexter’s stepsister and confidante Debra Morgan (played by Jennifer Carpenter). She is expected to carry forward her father’s legacy of acting as Dexter’s guiding light and his conscience of sorts. Besides, the show would also bring back the dreaded Trinity Killer (John Lithgow) in the form of flashbacks.
Showrunner Clyde Phillips had earlier revealed that the father-son theme would play an important part in ‘Dexter: New Blood’. He said that “The theme is fathers and sons. His son (Harrison) always thought he was dead, so there’s great resentment. Dexter has a lot of work to do to win his son back and prove he’s a good father.”
‘Dexter: New Blood’ is set to premiere on Voot Select in India in November 2021. While Dexter’s first to eighth seasons are currently streaming on Amazon Prime Video and Voot Select OTT platforms.
