If you guys have been following up on Mollywood’s first-ever Superhero film, ‘Minnal Murali’, you would know that the film production has been taking hits on multiple fronts – both on the film set and off of it. This has lead to multiple delays that the film production cannot afford, especially during these trying times. With the film being expected to get a direct-to-OTT release for some time now, new reports have broken out in the last hour – Netflix apparently has grabbed the streaming rights for ‘Minnal Murali‘!
Multiple varied reports have been giving the same news over and over again. While this is not an official confirmation by any means, the reports look like the lightning before the thunderstorm AKA Netflix’s “formal verification” (because saying official confirmation twice in a sentence is lame). As per these reports, ‘Minnal Murali’ will premiere directly for streaming on Netflix, next month (in September). We now await (hopefully) the thunderstorm.
Rumours that Netflix is trying to get the streaming rights for ‘Kurup’ and ‘Minnal Murali’ have been circulating for a week now, and we wouldn’t be surprised even if they were true. The OTT platform has only released one Malayalam film so far, ‘Irul’, and that movie has not had the impact that either ‘C U Soon’, ‘Drishyam 2’ or ‘Malik’ seemed to have had, on the Malayalam movie watching fanbase. With both films being highly anticipated and featuring popular actors in the lead role – these films are exactly the movies Netflix has been waiting for; the projects that will help boost their Malayalam subscribers (or Malayalam film-watching subscribers).
An Onam trailer is expected, which is on the 21st of this month, so that is when we will see the official confirmation – with Netflix watermark alongside the trailer. Posters have already come out featuring the Netflix logo (likely fan-made), but it looks like we might just get our first Malayalam direct-to-OTT released Superhero film as our first Malayalam Superhero film.
