Did Netflix’s ‘Monica, O My Darling’ Deserve a Theatrical Release?

Soon after OTT platform Netflix had unveiled the trailer for its upcoming dark comedy crime thriller film ‘Monica, O My Darling’, it became an instant hit and the talking point amongst movie buffs. Some even compared the treatment of the film with Sriram Raghavan’s cult film ‘Andhadhun’ while some others tagged ‘Monica, O My Darling’ as potentially the best Hindi film of 2022.

All these praises and the rather unanticipated, crazy excitement for a direct-to-OTT Indian film has sparked off discussions amongst a segment of fans who think that ‘Monica, O My Darling’ should have been released in theatres instead of OTT.

The comparisons of ‘Monica, O My Darling’ with Sriram Raghavan’s ‘Andhadhun’ make sense owing to the fact that the former’s director Vasan Bala seems to have executed the film in a way which is delightfully reminiscent of Ayushmann Khurrana’s 2018 film. And both these films belong to the same sub-genre.

And since ‘Andhadhun’ was a critically and commercially successful film, chances of success might have been high in case ‘Monica, O My Darling’ was released in theatres first before making its OTT premiere on Netflix.

However, the makers of the film have apparently thought that ‘Monica, O My Darling’ would be better off with a direct-to-OTT release on Netflix. And if the film indeed clicks with the audience and in case it was released in theatres first, then ‘Monica, O My Darling’ would also have given a much-needed boost to the Hindi film industry. But that’s not the case now.

Now, it would be interesting to see whether ‘Monica, O My Darling’ attracts similar attention and widespread praise on Netflix like the film’s trailer did.

Directed by Vasan Bala, ‘Monica, O My Darling’ features Rajkummar Rao as a robotics expert who gets involved in a passionate affair but eventually ends up being blackmailed. Desperate to get out of the mess, he teams up with a bunch of unlikely allies and intends to execute the perfect murder. The movie also features Huma Qureshi, Radhika Apte, and Sikander Kher, amongst others. ‘Monica, O My Darling’ will start streaming on Netflix from 11th November onwards.
