Did Prime Video’s ‘Chhorii 2’ Deserve A Theatrical Release?

Last week Prime Video dropped the trailer for its upcoming original movie ‘Chhorii 2’ and ever since people are pretty excited for the film. The trailer has impressed the masses and created the much needed pre-release hype amongst the viewers, so much so that some are even comparing it to have ‘Tumbbad’ like elements.

But amidst everything the most prominent reaction from the audience for ‘Chhorii 2’ trailer on YouTube is that the film deserved to be released on the big screen rather than on OTT.

Now that’s some huge expectations from a film whose first part wasn’t received that well. ‘Chhori’, remake of the Marathi film ‘Lapachhapi’, came out in 2021 and got mostly negative reviews with criticism for becoming too preachy towards the end. Though Nushrratt Bharuccha was praised for her performance.

But then it would be unfair to judge a sequel based on how its predecessor performed. Maybe the makers have learnt from their mistakes and really delivered a masterpiece in the horror genre with ‘Chhorii 2’ that relies more on the story rather than mere jump-scares scattered over the course of the film. We will get to know that in more details as and when ‘Chhorii 2’ arrives on Prime Video on 11th April, 2025.

As for the public opinion of ‘Chhorii 2’s theatrical release, it seems a bit far fetched for two reasons; first, as mentioned above, the first part didn’t do well thereby limiting makers to risk for a big screen release for the sequel and secondly, the film honestly lacks the power to attract audience to the cinemas despite having an interesting premise which apparently feels more suited for an OTT release.

  • After such diverse reactions it will be interesting to see how ‘Chhorii 2’ actually performs upon its premiere on Prime Video later this week and whether or not the audience’s belief in its theatrical release truly justified.
