Discipline Vs Vulgarity: Expert’s Take On OTT Regulation!

OTT platforms have emerged as a dominant force in the entertainment industry. They provide viewers with a vast array of content, from children’s cartoon to the sexual quench of adults. However, the rise of digital platforms has also led to discussions about the responsibility and discipline required to ensure the content remains within the boundaries of decency. Justice (retd) Mukul Mudgal, the chairperson of the Digital Media Content Regulatory Council (DMCRC), recently emphasized the importance of maintaining discipline in the world of OTT.

During an interactive session with representatives of member OTT platforms, Justice Mudgal urged them to tread carefully and not cross the line that separates good content from “unnecessary profanity.” It’s an issue that’s gaining increasing attention, as digital platforms reach millions of viewers and hold a substantial influence on society.

The DMCRC, a self-regulatory body, oversees OTT platforms. The recent session, chaired by Justice Mukul Mudgal, delved into various aspects of content regulation, with a particular focus on the depiction of obscenity, vulgarity, profanity, and violence in OTT content.

Justice Mudgal pointed out that what these platforms showcase has a profound impact on society, especially in a diverse democracy like India. The freedom to display curated content online is a crucial aspect of self-regulation, but it also comes with a significant responsibility. Maintaining a balance between creative expression and respecting societal norms is a challenge that OTT platforms face.

The fine line between discipline and profanity on OTT platforms is a subject that will continue to be debated. While creativity and artistic expression are vital, they must coexist with a commitment to societal sensibilities and values.

The ball rests in the hands of the government. Let’s see what they do.
