2020 was the year that the OTT and digital platforms boomed, as the world got stuck in their homes with their smartphones, laptops, tablets and Smart TVs, people binged more and more on such platforms. With all these came a new digital service Discovery+, it is Discovery’s own streaming platform that had the content of its own and also contents from its shows that were aired on the channel. The digital platform had content from its lifestyle sister channel TLC too making it a completely wholesome platform.
Discovery+ launched in March 2020 and as the year went on, it grew. Now the heads of the digital platform has announced that they will be moving ahead with launching and bringing Discovery+ to even more homes. As the New Year rolled in, so did the plans regarding the platform. It has been mentioned that Discovery+ will be rolled out in the States through Roku and Amazon Fire TV as they have been confirmed as the partners for the digital platform. It will be going live in the US by today.
The deal between Roku and Discovery+ gives Roku’s 46 million active users access to the streaming service. Other than that, Amazon Fire TV streaming devices, Fire TV Edition will have the streaming platform. Along with these two, the service will be provided to iOS, Android, iPhone, iPad, iPod touch and Apple TV, Microsoft Xbox One and Series S/X devices, and Samsung Smart TV edition that has been released since 2017.
Other than the deals in States, Discovery also has sealed deals with Vodafone to help reach more countries across Europe. It has been said that Discovery has signed a “multi year” deal with Vodafone to help rollout Discovery+ all across Europe. This agreement includes 12 major European markets, which will make Discovery content available to every Vodafone mobile customer. These 12 markets are the UK, Germany, Turkey, Italy, Spain, Romania, Portugal, Greece, Czech Republic, Hungary, Ireland and Iceland. Discovery+ is already live in the U.K at the moment.
This partnership with Vodafone gives Discovery the access to reach around 100M Vodafone TV, fixed broadband and mobile subscribers all over Europe in the next 2 years. With all these new strategies and plans being rolled out, Discovery+ will be reaching new heights in the coming years.
