Disney is making immense progress. This time, it’s all about an Indian family in Disney’s brand new movie “Spin”. Touted to be its first Indian centred film, “Spin” will be released as a Disney Channel movie first. Given the success that the generations have had with their movies and shows on the Disney channel, this definitely looks like one that people should look out for.
The story of the movie follows a young Indian American girl named Rhea on her journey to become a young and aspiring DJ. That’s right, a DJ, something that is totally off the records for kids and children whose parents have immigrated to the states to give them a good life. Rhea, who will be played by Avantika Vandanapu will be portrayed as a girl who loves coding and creating music and is a member of her school’s coding club.
Accompanied and loved by her small group of friends, she realises she actually has passion for creating music. Not just any music that is played by some instrument. She loves creating those by mixing sounds and loves creating sound through electronic media. She comes from a family who owns an Indian restaurant and has a multigenerational family that stays together, where everyone has grown close to each other after she lost her mother.
The movie will be starring Bollywood actor Abhay Deol as Rhea’s father. While U.K. based actor Meera Syal will play the role of Rhea’s grandmother Asha, and Aryan Simhadri (who will star in the Disney+ remake of Cheaper By The Dozen) as Rhea’s younger brother Rohan. The movie will also star Anna Cathcart from “All The Boys I’ve Loved” fame, as one of Rhea’s best friends.
Directed by Manjari Makijany, “Spin” will most definitely be a breakthrough movie of sorts for Disney channel who has had reputation of bringing and introducing icons like Hillary Duff, Raven Simone, Miley Cyrus, Selena Gomez, Demi Lovato, Zac Efron, Cole and Dylan Sprouse along with the Jonas Brothers and so many more. The movie though will come first on Disney Channel; it will most definitely stream on Disney+ later, like it has been with all other Disney movies.
Though Asian American culture has been getting some sort of highlight, Indian culture and heritage till very recently wasn’t being included in that. Netflix broke the streak last year by bringing the series “Never Have I Ever” and now it’s time for Disney to do the same and bring forward the Indian American representation.
