It is no secret that high school can become a hard and complicated experience for some students. Pretty much the same happens with Ben Wang’s character, Jin Wang, in the Disney+ series American Born Chinese. The streaming platform has dropped the upcoming show’s trailer, featuring Wang alongside Yeo Yann Yann’s Christine Wang and Jim Liu’s Wei-Chen. Additionally, the trailer shows us glimpses of Academy Award-winning performers Michelle Yeoh and Key Huy Quan.
We see Jin wanting a simple high-school life without drama or complications. He is the only Asian-American student in his school. However, his life changes dramatically after encountering a new transfer student, Wei-Chen. The latter’s arrival brings several unexpected changes in Jin’s life.
Soon, Jin discovers that Wei-Chen has superpowers. Also, the latter receives the support of Guanyin (Yeoh), the goddess of mercy from Chinese mythology. Also, we see Daniel Wu as Sun Wukong, The Monkey King. Wei-Chen needs Jin’s aid to stop a portal opening between the different realms of Earth and Heaven.
American Born Chinese is inspired by the 2006 graphic novel, which was penned by Gene Luen Yang. The series’ filming commenced in February last year.
Created by Kelvin Liu, the upcoming Disney+ series consists of eight episodes. Destin Daniel Cretton and Lucy Liu serve as their helmers. The pilot episode has been directed by Cretton. He also serves as the series’ executive producer along with Jake Kasdan and Kelvin Yu.
American Born Chinese will release on Disney+ Hotstar on May 24. Stay tuned for more updates.
