November proved to be a productive and lucrative month for Disney Plus Hotstar. The streaming giant has been on a roll in November, on the back of streaming rights for blockbuster Indian films. Disney Plus Hotstar premiered not one, not two, but five Indian cinematic films on its platform in November – all of them much-awaited, and all doing exceedingly well on the streamer.
Riding on the success wave of these licensed films, Disney Plus Hotstar had OTT viewers eating out of its hands in the month of November. Three films on Disney Plus Hotstar in November are out and out blockbusters – Ranbir Kapoor’s Brahmastra; Dulquer Salmaan’s Sita Ramam in Hindi, and Mammootty’s mystery thriller, Rorschach.
However, the scenario was vastly different in the Disney Plus Hotstar Originals department. The platform had no prominent original release this past month – no buzzy original series or a hot and happening original movie. All that Disney Plus Hotstar had by way of original programming in November were two reality series – The Great Indian Bride and Dum Laga Ke India.
The first is hosted by Shriya Pilgaonkar, and features five brides who share their bridal stories with viewers. The show is created in association with Tata jewellery brand Tanishq, and so the brides are all styled in Tanishq’s Rivaah bridal jewellery. The Great Indian Bride is more like a marketing campaign for Tanishq than a true-blue reality show. Dum Laga Ke India is hosted by celebrity chef Ranveer Brar, as he chronicles the food, heritage, and culture of four Indian cities – Mumbai, Hyderabad, Kolkata, and Bengaluru. Both shows are average, and hardly have any buzz or viewers.
