If there’s one industry that’s growing rapidly despite the economic slowdown due to the pandemic, it’s the digital entertainment industry and OTT platforms are making the most out of it.
And now, Disney+ Hotstar has solidified its position in India after it released a report this week saying it had reached over 8.5 million subscribers in the country. From April to June the company has added almost 6.25 lakh subscribers to their viewership base in India. This account to 15% of their total paid subscriber base as of August 3rd.
As per reports, the Average Revenue per Unit (ARPU) globally was $4.62 but after excluding Disney+ Hotstar it increased to $5.31. These lower costs were offset by the lower advertising revenue of Disney+ Hotstar.
The Indian Premiere League is scheduled to be played from September 19th – November 10th in the UAE instead of its usual April-May period. This absence of cricket in the third quarter is the reason for lesser advertising revenue which will be reflected in future quarters as well.
There are estimates that Disney+ Hotstar could become the second-largest streaming platform in India in 5 years. This is despite the contraction in revenue due to the corona virus pandemic this year.
In fact Disney has also announced plans to launch an international streaming service in the Asia Pacific region starting from next year to expand its reach.
Disney+ Hotstar’s phenomenal growth proves that it’s on track to give tough competition to streaming giants Netflix and Hotstar and the company is taking all measures to expand its entertainment offerings to the viewers.
