Disney Plus is working on a live-action adaptation of its cult animated series, ‘Gargoyles’. The reboot series comes from writer Gary Dauberman, in collaboration with James Wan’s Atomic Monster production company. Both Gary Dauberman and James Wan will serve as executive producers on the Disney Plus Gargoyles series.
Gary Dauberman is well-known for writing the successful ‘Annabelle’ films franchise, ‘The Nun’ films, and the two ‘It’ films. He’s also helmed ‘Annabelle Comes Home’, as his directorial debut. The Annabelle and The Nun films had Gary Dauberman collaborating with James Wan’s Atomic Monster.
The original nineties’ series ‘Gargoyles’ centred on the entire clan of mythical creatures who froze to stone during the day and came alive at night. But Disney Plus’ reboot Gargoyles series seems to be centred on Goliath, the last of a heroic race of gargoyle warriors.
The official logline of the upcoming Disney Plus Gargoyles series reads: “Based on the cult classic Disney animated series, Goliath is the last of a heroic race of gargoyle warriors who once lived among mankind. Free from a centuries long curse that turned him into stone, Goliath struggles to solve the mystery of his past while watching over modern-day New York City alongside police detective Elisa Maza.”
The 1994-1997 series ‘Gargoyles’ was created by Greg Weisman, and produced by Walt Disney Television Animation. The show enjoyed cult status amongst its fans for its dark tone, complex story arcs, sword and sorcery action, science fiction elements and intriguing characters. Its cult status has lingered on amongst fans through the last couple of decades.
The opening narration of the animated ‘Gargoyles’ series reads – “One thousand years ago, superstition and the sword ruled. It was a time of darkness. It was a world of fear. It was the age of gargoyles. Stone by day, warriors by night, We were betrayed by the humans we had sworn to protect, frozen in stone by a magic spell for a thousand years. Now, here in Manhattan, the spell is broken, and we live again! We are defenders of the night! We are gargoyles!”
