After the massive success of the streamer’s first K-Drama “Snowdrop“, Disney+ is now venturing into launching more Korean content, including originals. 2022 lineup unveils a total of 20 Korean dramas, 12 being originals.
“Snowdrop”, starring Blackpink’s Jisoo and Jung Ha was one of the front runners among the top 5 Disney+ most-watched titles in the Pacific-Asian subcontinents. Though the show was one of the most-streamed series of all time in certain Asian countries, it received a hotly backlash from the South Korean regions. They criticized it for the depiction of their authoritarian period which they felt was misleading and inconsiderate. But the criticisms did little to dampen the success of this show overseas.
Sources from Hollywood Reporter reveal that this week Disney+ has unveiled some details about their forthcoming Korean series and one licensed show. The originals include “Big mouth”, thriller drama featuring Lee Jong-suk and Lim Yoon; “Soundtrack #1”, a romantic musical drama starring Park Hyung Sik and Han So Hee, and “The Zone: Survival Mission”, a survival gameshow starring Yoo Jae-suk, Lee Kwang-soo, and Yuri. “Crazy love”, a romantic comedy starring Krystal Jung and Kim Jae-wook is also going to be streamed by Disney+.
During the recent few months, Disney+ unveiled its first slate of series that are currently streaming on the platform, namely “Grid”, “Snowdrop”, “Rookie Cops”, “Outrun by Running Man” and “Blackpink: The Movie”.
After the giant success of the Netflix series “Squid Game“, Disney+ followed its trail and since 2021 it has been trying to gain global popularity and subscribers from Asia, South America, and elsewhere by producing more profitable Korean content.
