Disney+ first quarter details are out and Disney+ has now surpassed the 94.9 million subscribers mark. In December, during the investor’s day program Disney+ revealed its brand new goals and also disclosed the number of subscribers it had at that point, along with that Disney+ aimed to achieve 230 to 240 million subscribers by 2024. The report released by the company on Thursday , showed the amount of growth the streaming platform has had since its beginning. Just hours after the report was revealed the company’s stock was up by about 2%.
Disney+ successfully launched in November 2019 and on day one they had 10 million subscribers already and with the growth the streaming platform saw during the pandemic, their whole ball game of releasing content on the platform changed. In the 2nd quarter last year, the platform had 33.5 million subscribers and as the pandemic came in and forced people to stay inside, the 3rd quarter subscriber count saw a massive jump of subscribers. By the 3rd quarter the streaming platform had reached the 57.5 million subscriber count.
The Disney Investor Day program revealed that the streaming platform had crossed the 86 million subscribers count in December 2020. The huge change and influx of subscribers came in as Disney+ started focusing more and more on the content it was releasing. Series like the Mandalorian, other Star Wars, Marvel and Disney content are one of the biggest reasons for the bump in subscriber count.
On the other hand, Disney+ Hotstar has contributed 28 million subscribers that took the global count of the streaming platform to the present, 94.9 Million subscribers. Disney+ Hotstar contributed 30 percent to the total growth, which only saw an increase since last quarter’s 25 percent. For Disney+ Hotstar alone, the quarterly growth saw 10 Million more subscribers. One of the biggest reasons, Disney+ Hotstar saw such a massive growth in subscribers is because of the live streaming of the Indian Premier League matches. Apart from India, Disney+ Hotstar is available in Indonesia and Singapore.
With all these put together, it can be safely said that Disney+ is one of the fastest growing streaming platforms out there and growth of the platform in just a year of it’s launch is evident through the amount of subscribers it has achieved in this time frame. Also the subscriber count of Hotstar shows the contribution India and South Asia has made to the streaming platform.
