Disney+’s ‘Ironheart’ Gets Robert Downey Jr’s Nod

Despite emerging news reports about Kevin Feige leading a creative overhaul to slow down the release of MCU projects, there are still plenty of Disney+ shows lined up, guaranteeing that 2025 is going to be another busy year for Marvel Studios. One of those shows is Ironheart, starring Dominique Thorne.

Ever since Feige announced Ironheart in December 2020, fan reactions to the Disney+ series have been highly polarising. While some are eagerly waiting to welcome Riri Williams into the MCU, there’s also a noticeable section of the franchise’s fanbase that finds it difficult to accept her, believing Marvel will portray her as Iron Man’s replacement, a role made iconic by the supremely talented Robert Downey Jr.

Many fans have already started comparing Riri to Tony Stark, which doesn’t make a lot of sense, as these two characters are drastically different from each other in terms of persona, mentality, and character arcs in the comics.

In a recent interview with Empire Magazine, Thorne revealed that she met with Robert Downey Jr. about taking on the role of Disney+’s Ironheart. She even disclosed that the Academy Award-winning actor offered his blessing to don the armour.

“Robert Downey Jr and I spoke just after we wrapped, and he shared some very lovely words about my journey. He told me how excited he was and that he’s rooting for it, too. I literally got two thumbs up. It’s really reassuring to know you’re not embarrassing Iron Man.”

Well, this should definitely be considered a sign of approval—and the end of all the nonsensical talk about Riri replacing Tony.

Moreover, Anthony Ramos has been confirmed to portray The Hood. The upcoming Disney+ show is expected to throw Thorne’s character, Riri Williams, into situations where her technological prowess will be tested against magic—a challenge reminiscent of Tony Stark, who famously built his initial Iron Man armour with limited resources.

Despite facing seemingly insurmountable odds, Riri’s success will likely stem not just from her advanced technology but more importantly, from her sharp intellect and adaptability.

In addition, Sacha Baron Cohen is rumoured to play Mephisto in Ironheart. Yes, Mephisto! We’ve been hearing about the character’s live-action MCU debut for a long time now. Let’s see what happens. Stay tuned for more updates.
