Do you remember last year when there was a lot of ruckus on the revival of the physical discs? It was sparked by the lord Christopher Nolan himself when he called streaming services EVIL.
Funny but yeah, it happened. Also, Netflix stopped its physical disc distribution last year which happens to be their first step in the field of entertainment industry.
Regardless, there seems to be a new step towards the revival of physical media. Also, it looks like a more solid step against the lip service of Nolan. What’s that?
Disney has teamed up with Sony Pictures Entertainment to handle making, selling, and promoting DVDs and Blu-ray discs, even as fewer people are buying physical discs. This means Sony will take care of getting Disney movies onto store shelves in the U.S. and Canada.
It’s a bit surprising because fewer folks are buying DVDs and Blu-rays these days. Instead, they’re turning to streaming services like Netflix. In fact, sales of physical discs dropped a lot in the first part of 2023, and big stores like Best Buy stopped selling them altogether.
Disney says teaming up with Sony helps them keep their movies available in stores and respond to what people want. But some wonder if it’s a smart move when most folks prefer streaming. It would have been a great deal back in 2004 but looks like Disney is 20 years late.
Yes, 2004 was 20 years back :).
We are not the only ones making you feel old but Disney is also trying to bring back an old way of watching movies while most people are moving forward with new technology. Time will tell if it’s a good idea or if Disney will have to rethink its strategy in the digital age.
