DCEU had its fair share of ups and downs. While the franchise was cluttered and lacked cohesion overall, it did manage to bestow some amazing and highly entertaining films to fans. One of them was James Wan’s Aquaman (2018), starring Jason Momoa. The film is currently streaming on Netflix.
Aquaman revolves around Arthur Curry (Jason Momoa), who becomes the leader of Atlantis after defeating his half-brother, Orm, aka Ocean Master (Patrick Wilson), and uniting the seven underwater kingdoms. This James Wan directional largely benefits from the leading man’s take on the ‘King of Atlantis.’ Many DC fans do not take Aquaman seriously and consider him a lame superhero. But Momoa’s charisma and maniac energy give a new and fresh spin to the superhero in the film.
The film also benefits from Wan’s direction, eye-popping underwater visuals, and exhilarating action sequences. It is ambitious and delivers some innovative and cool action sequences to viewers. The rest of the cast, including Patrick Wilson, Willem Dafoe, Nicole Kidman, Temuera Morrison, and Dolph Lundgren, all look fine. Yahya Abdul-Mateen II’s portrayal of Black Manta was engaging and intense. Yes, the movie looks a bit overstuffed, but its fun and light-hearted tone makes our watching experience rewarding.
Rupert Gregson-Williams’ score in this film is atmospheric and brilliant. Don Burgess also does one hell of a job in the cinematography department.
Aquaman is DCEU’s highest-grossing instalment, collecting over $1.1 billion at the global box office during its theatrical run against a mammoth budget of $200 million. Overall, it is a must-watch film. Stream it now on Netflix.
