If you have been following us, other media websites or social media (twitter mainly) in general, then you should be aware of the slow, yet steady call for an “AyerCut” version of the 2017 Warner Bros. Pictures film ‘Suicide Squad’. The director of said film, David Ayer, was forced to make major cuts by the production house – who at the time – “took the hits like a soldier”. But ever since #ReleasetheSnyderCut following won over Warner Bros., #ReleasetheAyerCut started and slowly became more prominent in the next few months; Snyder himself giving his approval over the support. But do we really need “Ayer Cut”?
2017’s ‘Suicide Squad’ was bad. The characters of Harley Quinn, Deadshot and surprisingly, Captain Boomerang, along with the film’s soundtrack made the whole thing somewhat bearable, but the rest of the characters (the cast mainly), film editing and the script were …meh. Even Jared Leto’s heavily tattooed Joker would have been better if he was not included at all. If the 45 minutes of the film footage which was cut out from Ayer’s version of the film (30 minutes of it featuring Jared Leto’s screen time) was added to make DAvid Ayer’s version of the film, there is no guarantee that the movie will get the attention that the recently released ‘Zack Snyder’s Justice League’ recieved.
Plus let’s face it. The DCEU has been releasing crap since ‘Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice’. Okay, calling “BvS” crap is too harsh. The aforementioned film did have some strong buildup and some brilliant moments which were tainted by a few, yet major issues – which ultimately decided DC’s cinematic fate… ‘Suicide Squad’ included (unfortunate but true). Of course, Batman v Superman got a Snydercut as well, which made the plot more believable, but the quirky film about a rag-tag group of misfits becoming heroes didn’t get it’s director’s cut …but then again, that’s probably because Zack Snyder is the “Daddy” of all directorial releases, while Ayer, who is brilliant by the way, isn’t known for it.
Warner Bros. Pictures have now brought in a director for the sequel/ spin-off ‘The Suicide Squad’ who has proven himself in the Superhero genre by making a “quirky film about a rag-tag group of misfits becoming heroes” …in space, so the “AyerCut” is not necessary either, since all our favourite characters will be returning in this film (No deadshot though). And the trailer has us believing that this will be the best DC film among the whole lot (highly likely). Plus Jared Leto redeemed himself as the Joker in a special cameo at the end of ‘Zack Snyder’s Justice League’. So, we got our bases covered for a “redemption arc” for the actors/ characters as well. So everything points to the fact that we don’t really need Ayer Cut…
But that doesn’t mean that we don’t want to see it. And for the people who are using the above statements (or other ones) to argue your way to explain why we don’t need an “AyerCut”, please read the tweet down below, and imagine it unfolding on the silver screen.
