Doctor Strange 2 Outshines Eternals, Shang-Chi in Disney+ Viewership

Sam Raimi’s latest directorial outing ‘Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness’ released in theatres on 6th May and the film has now become the second highest grossing movie of 2022 (after Top Gun: Maverick). Until now, it has collected over a massive $947 million at the box office worldwide. While ‘Doctor Strange 2’ is still running in some theatres, it started streaming on the Disney+ and Disney+ Hotstar OTT platforms from 22nd June.

And as per the latest viewing stats by data analytics company Samba TV, the ‘Doctor Strange’ sequel has performed quite well on Disney’s streaming service. According to Samba TV, ‘Doctor Strange 2’ was watched by 2.1 million US households during the first five days of its release on the Disney Plus OTT platform.

And in doing that, the Benedict Cumberbatch starrer ‘Doctor Strange 2’ has surpassed MCU’s earlier films namely ‘Eternals’, ‘Shang-Chi’, and ‘Black Widow’, which watched by 2 million, 1.7 million, and 1.1 million US households, respectively, during the first five days since their OTT premiere on Disney Plus.

However, if we compare the viewership data of ‘Doctor Strange 2’ with the Netflix film ‘Red Notice’ starring Dwayne Johnson, Ryan Reynolds, and Gal Gadot, the MCU superhero movie is way behind. Because ‘Red Notice’ was purportedly watched by a whopping 4.2 million US households. Some other films which are ahead of ‘Doctor Strange 2’ in terms of premiere viewership figures are ‘Mortal Combat’ (3.8 million), ‘Godzilla Vs Kong’ (3.6 million), ‘The Suicide Squad’ (2.8 million), ‘Without Remorse’ (2.6 million), and ‘The Harder They Fall’ (2.5 million), amongst others.

Having said that, Sam Raimi’s ‘Doctor Strange 2’ has been received well by a large segment of audiences. The film has a 74% critics score on Rotten Tomatoes and the audience score is much higher at 85%. Besides, it has received a decent 7.1/10 user rating on IMDb. For those of you who had missed watching the film in theatres, you can stream it on the Disney Plus and Disney Plus Hotstar OTT platforms.

Helmed by ‘Spider-Man’ and ‘Evil Dead’ director Sam Raimi, the sequel film follows the adventures of the titular superhero Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch), who tries to save a mysterious young girl named America Chavez (Xochitl Gomez) who has the ability to travel between multiple parallel universes. But to protect her, he must team up with powerful allies to face a formidable enemy.
