Does SonyLIV’s Churuli Deserve The Flak It Is Going To Get From The HC?

If you guys didn’t know already, the direct to OTT released supernatural thriller, ‘Churuli‘, has got itself in trouble with the High Court of Kerala. The HC has called the film “atrocious in nature” and they have sent a proper notice to the censor board, filmmaker and director. While the film has got mostly mixed reviews (with many positive and negative mixed in as well) from critics, most of them do not have a problem with the issue that the HC seems to have found – the heavily swearing. If swear words is the primary problem of this film, should this film deserve the flak that the HC is most likely going to give it?

Unfortunately, this problem is more complex than one would think. According to the latest reports, the CBFC AKA the Central Board of Film Certification is under the impression that the filmmakers have featured a different version of the film AKA a non-approved version of the movie. If this is true, then the filmmakers behind ‘Churuli’ as well as SonyLIV, the OTT platform that is streaming the movie, will have no other option but to stop the film from streaming.

But, if this news is not true, then ‘Churuli’ has a fighting chance. ‘Churuli‘ is a film of mystique and intrigue and the swearing is meant to keep viewers at the edge of their seats (which it does). Rarely has a Malayalam film featured a swear word, but a plethora of swear words is definitely history-making (and record-breaking). An argument can be made that the film has added these many swear words for the shock factor since this has never happened before – which is what it was meant to do. Still, it is early days, so we have to wait and see which way the HC is going to lean.
