Looking for a perfect romantic flick? The 2010s witnessed a diverse range of films based on romantic dramas or rom-coms, treasuring different plots, settings, themes, and character dynamics. From conventional romantic tales to out-of-the-world love stories, this decade bestowed a wide variety of romantic narratives that not only connected with the audience but also lured them into the theatres in significant numbers. Josh Boone’s ‘The Fault In Our Stars’ is also one of those romantic flicks.
Based on John Green’s novel of the same name, ‘The Fault In Our Stars’ revolves around Hazel (Shailene Woodley) and Gus (Ansel Elgort). The former suffers from thyroid cancer, and Gus lost a leg due to bone cancer. They soon fall in love after encountering each other at a support group. Their tale of love, excitement, and self-exploration leads them to Amsterdam to meet their favourite author. Tragically, Gus’ health starts deteriorating, which also becomes the reason behind his heartbreaking demise in the film. This scenario leaves Hazel alone in a world forever changed.
The film has received acclaim for its realistic portrayal of cancer patients and the struggles of teenagers. But the brightest part of the movie is the chemistry between Woodley and Elgort. The way they have conveyed the emotional depths of their respective characters in the film is phenomenal. In addition, the visuals and the cinematography look damn good. The rest of the cast, including Laura Dern, Sam Trammell, Nat Wolff, and Willem Dafoe, also does a fantastic job. Josh Boone’s fine direction and the overall film do complete justice to Green’s famous novel.
‘The Fault In Our Stars’ has a ‘fresh’ 81% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. It was a blockbuster, earning over $307 million during its theatrical run against its $12 million budget.
