Disney Plus has recently revealed that it is developing a reboot of the iconic TV show, Doogie Howser, M.D., which had Neil Patrick Harris playing a child prodigy who becomes a doctor at the age of 16.
Disney’s reboot, however, will feature a female taking the lead — meet Doogie Kealoha, M.D., a half Asian half American girl, who lives in Hawaii. Kourtney Kang, herself from Hawaii, is spearheading the reboot for Disney Plus. Kang has earlier served as writer-producer for all nine seasons of How I Met Your Mother, which also starred Neil Patrick Harris.
The original Doogie Howser, M.D. has achieved cult status among TV enthusiasts, who associate it with fond memories. Harris was adorable as Doogie, who juggled his medical responsibilities with regular teenage angst, with sometimes serious, sometimes hilarious, but always profound consequences.
The original showrunners were David E Kelly and late Steven Bochco. Bochco’s widow, Dayna Bochco, and son, Jesse Bochco, will executive produce the reboot with Kang, along with Jake Kasdan and Melvin Mar. The reboot will be produced by 20th Century Fox.
Initial reactions indicate that audiences are not too enthused with the idea of a reboot of the iconic show. Only time will tell how the reboot pans out.
