‘VHS Beyond’ premiered in the Fantastic Fest 2024 and fans of the series are excited about the movie. For Indian fans, there are some different reasons to rejoice though. The popular V/H/S series is having an Indian segment in their latest anthology for the very first time.
The segment is titled ‘Dream Girl’ and it is directed by film student Virat Pal. It will be telling the story of a group of paparazzi photographers who sneak behind a film set and find out that the superstar of the film is waiting in her trailer. The photographers’ adventure does not go very smoothly and it turns out to be a nightmare.
V/H/S has come up with innovative and terrific ideas for found footage horror and have impressed the audiences throughout these years with low-budget creative filmmaking. It will be good to see India’s representation finally in this anthology sequel. Virat Pal has said that he chose a Bollywood set for the movie because he wanted to communicate Bollywood’s dreaminess in the genre of horror. How successful he is, we can only find out after watching the movie.
This representation is indeed a huge matter for Indian fans of the series and there will probably be more South Asian stories told in the global stage, in participation with filmmakers of the British and American industries. Surely the landscape is changing. And hopefully filmmakers like Nuhash Humayun and Virat Pal will make South Asian horror a genre as recognizable as Korean revenge thrillers or Chinese martial art movies.
