Drishyam 2 has exceeded the expectations of many – the audience, the critics, Amazon Prime Video and the writer-director-creator himself, Jeethu Joseph. Drishyam 2, just like its predecessor Drishyam went in with low expectation and then blew the minds of everyone who watched the films. Jeethu Joseph recently gave an interview on online news website, The Quint which shed some light on the possibility of a third film in the franchise.
Drishyam 2 was the continuation of Drishyam (which we know), and we all know the story, so the “thriller part” of the series ended at the first film (there were thrills in the second part though). Jeethu Joseph then decided to make a story that still kept the family-drama element, but switched the thriller component for a mystery one. Mohanlal’s Georgekutty has to work around the police (which does provide thrills), but the way he has done so remains a mystery to us, till the very end of Drishyam 2.
Jeethu Joseph said that even though he has left some elements open for a possible sequel to Drishyam 2, unless a thread of an idea comes to him (like it did for Drishyam 2), he won’t make Drishyam 3. When he made Drishyam, Jeethu was very sure he wouldn’t make a sequel, but here we are now, 7 years later – a hit sequel. Georgekutty has to always be alert, so he can’t take any unwanted risks. So introducing a new element there will be time consuming, and will need a rested mind for developing it, and hence cannot be rushed.
For now, Jeethu is working on a Telugu remake of Drishyam 2, starring Daggubati Venkatesh. We do not know if any of the other actors will return, but the announcement has only been made two days ago, so there is still time. He is also in talks with Ajay Devgn for the Hindi remake of Drishyam 2 and hopes to make a Tamil sequel to Papanasam.
