Drishyam 2 has been in the news ever since the news of its conception came around. As the new year rolled in, so did the news of Drishyam 2 release came in. As per the news Dirshyam 2 skipped the theatrical release and opted for direct to digital release through Amazon Prime Video. Though many were disappointed that they won’t be able to relive the thrill of watching the sequel in theatres, others were still overjoyed that finally the movie was coming out.
Drishyam, the prequel when it came out back in 2013 became a hit instantly and received positive remarks not only from fans, but critics too. The movie became the first Malayalam movie to collect Rs. 500 million in the box office. The movie was such a fan favourite that it was turned into a remake for various other Indian languages, including Hindi. The Hindi version of the movie, released with the same name and starred Ajay Devgn, Shriya Saran and Tabu in the leads. The Bollywood version, just like the original, became a hit instantly.
Recently, the news about remaking the sequel in Hindi came in. By now, we all know that the movie will be released through a streaming platform and not just any, but one that has a massive subscriber base in India. Releasing the movie through Amazon Prime Video has the ability to pull in more viewers from the Hindi speaking population too. Times are different now as even movies with regional languages have a massive fanbase and viewership amongst Hindi speaking population, as and when it streams online.
The language barrier for most has been bridged by the streaming platforms as they either release it with subtitles or have a dubbed version. If the movie is remade in Hindi, then Drishyam 2 might become one of the first Indian movies to release in digital space that has a remake in Hindi. This might also make you think that wasn’t Soorarai Pottru getting a Hindi remake? Yes, certainly there were articles that stated that the makers were in talks to remake the movie in Hindi but again, there hasn’t been anything solid after that. Whereas, for Drishyam 2 with the rights being already bought for the Hindi remake, this might eventually overtake Soorarai Pottru’s Hindi remake release.
Remaking here isn’t an issue of course, but to see how the remake will be perceived by the audience will become an interesting point of discussion, especially when in today’s day and age OTT can bring in a decent amount of Hindi speaking population to watch the movie.
