According to sources, one of the most awaited Malayalam movies, Dulquer Salmaan-starrer ‘Kurup’ is finally gearing up for a theatrical release. Helmed by Srinath Rajendran, the upcoming crime thriller is inspired by the life of Kerala’s most wanted criminal Sukumara Kurup. Latest buzz on the ground says that theatre associations have been informed that ‘Kurup‘ will arrive on November 12th. Although there is no official confirmation yet, an announcement from the makers is expected soon.
Filmmakers were resorting to taking the OTT route since cinema theatres in Kerala hadn’t reopened. Post the digital release of big-ticket films like Fahadh Faasil’s ‘Malik’ and Prithviraj’s ‘Cold Case’, it was being speculated that ‘Kurup’ too would follow suit and opt for a Direct-to-OTT release on Amazon Prime Video. Although Dulquer who has also produced the film under his banner Wayfarer Films, earlier said that he was keen on a theatrical release only, rumours were rife that the makers may have had a change in heart and were in talks with major OTT platforms.
In a recent statement on rumours that actor Prithviraj Sukumaran was to have a cameo in ‘Kurup’, Dulquer wrote, “It’s encouraging to see the buzz around Kurup and I am really excited to bring the movie to you guys soon. However, there is a lot of fake information going around right now. When the time is right, you will all get to watch the film and witness first-hand who are doing cameos in Kurup. However, right now whatever is being spread is not true and I would sincerely request you to stop propagating this information. It isn’t fair to the fans of our stars to have expectations and for us to disappoint them.”
Written by KS Aravind, Jithin K Jose and Daniell Sayooj Nair, ‘Kurup’ stars Dulquer Salmaan in the titular role with Indrajith Sukumaran,Tovino Thomas, Sunny Wayne, Shine Tom Chacko, Sobhita Dhulipala, Manoj Bajpayee and Maya Menon in supporting roles. With the film’s release having being postponed multiple times due to the pandemic, we hope this rumour is true. Regardless, Kerala theatres have received some good news after a long time and a theatre revival is surely in the offing.
