The Dulquer Salmaan starrer ‘Kurup’ is being speculated to come out on an OTT streaming platform but no one knows which streaming platform as of yet. The most recent reports suggest that the production house and a leading OTT service are currently undergoing talks to digitally release this action-crime thriller. No official announcement has been made yet.
‘Kurup’ is produced by WayfarerFilms. If that sounds familiar, it is because the production company is owned by Dulquer Salman himself. Dulquer is said to be playing the titular character in the upcoming Malayalam biopic ‘Kurup’ (based on true events).
Sukumaran Kurup is an infamous criminal, one of the most wanted offenders in the Indian state of Kerala. He is accused of killing a man Chacko back in 1984, and used his dead body to claim insurance. Chengannur-born Kurup is also accused of organised crime and fraud by the State Government of Kerala.
The accused has been on the list of absconding accused in Kerala since 1984, but he still hasn’t been caught. Back in 1984, a film titled ‘NH47’ waas made on which focused on the Chacko murder, but in the movie, Kurup was caught by the police. The upcoming crime-thriller is said to be sticking to the truth. The movie will be directed by Srinath Rajendran, Dulquer playing the titular character (as mentioned earlier) and Tovino Thomas will portray Chacko.
In the last six months, most Malayalam movies which were released on OTTs were low-to-medium budget films, including the Dulquer produced ‘Maniyarayile Ashokan’. Most of the big budgets have been put on hold by their production houses, waiting for the “pandemic storm” to pass. But if the rumors are true about this biopic, then ‘Kurup’ will be Mollywood’s first direct-to-OTT big budget film. Dulquer has been adamant that the film will only release theatrically and has been saying that for the past few months, but maybe the recent situation might have changed his mind.
