Dune 2 Trailer: Why Are Austin Butler Scenes Shown In Black & White?

Warner Bros has revealed the trailer for the upcoming film Dune 2. The trailer, as expected, is exceptionally great. The brilliant music, extraordinary cinematography, and impactful storytelling are very evident even in the trailer.

If you are a fan of the film franchise, then you may already have watched the trailer. But did you figure out why some scenes are shown in Black & White? Particularly the scenes of Austin Butler are colorless, which looks phenomenal but is confusing at the same time.

Lately, filmmakers have realized that some scenes are better in Black and White. Nolan used this binary in his early days as a director when he made Memento. Even in recent times, The Lighthouse was fully Black and White. Also, Nolan’s upcoming Oppenheimer has all the subjective scenes without color.

But the main question…, why are some scenes Black and White in Dune 2?

Denis Villeneuve takes audiences on a visual journey to the infamous planet of Giedi Prime, the Harkonnen homeworld. However, what truly sets this portrayal apart is the striking decision to present Giedi Prime in stark black and white, a departure from the colorful landscapes seen in its predecessor and the source material penned by Frank Herbert.

The muted monochromatic palette enveloping Giedi Prime serves as a visual touch to underscore the stark contrast between the Harkonnen stronghold and the arid landscapes of Arrakis. By opting for a black and white aesthetic, Villeneuve aims to amplify the inherent darkness and ruthlessness that permeates the planet and its inhabitants.

Central to these black-and-white sequences is the character of Feyd-Rautha, the nephew of Baron Harkonnen, portrayed by Stellan Skarsgård. Feyd-Rautha, played by Gerard Butler, embodies a more monstrous appearance, shaven-headed like the Baron and Dave Bautista’s Glossu Rabban. This transformation aligns Feyd-Rautha’s visual portrayal with the twisted nature of the Harkonnen bloodline, emphasizing their brutal disposition.
