Talking about the box office, Dune Part Two is running wild and gave fans the first blockbuster of the year. Even this weekend, the film managed to gross $46 million, second to Kung Fu Panda’s $58 million.
Now, regarding the box office numbers, Dune Part Two has grossed $370 million, with 42.5% of it coming from the domestic market, which amounts to around $157 million. Comparing it to Dune Part One, which had a total box office run of $433 million, the domestic contribution was only 25.1%.
Why does this matter?
Previously, Dune Part One opted for a parallel streaming strategy, being screened in theaters and on HBO. But Dune Part Two won’t make the same mistake, opting for a delay in VOD release.
Dune: Part Two will be released on VOD on Amazon, with a Bonus X-ray edition, but it will be released on April 16th, leaving room for a solid theatrical run, which will likely result in better box office numbers.
The VOD edition also comes with a hefty price tag of $29.99, quite expensive for the American audience. Dune can afford an early OTT release in the US, as most of the audience would have already watched it by now. However, the Asian market tends to prefer a steady theatrical run, which may be more prolonged than in the US.
You can expect a late OTT release in India as well, mostly in May at the earliest. Keep following Binged for more updates on your favorite films.
