Buzzfeed Studios has gone into the pre-production phase of what seems to be their first ever feature film. The “new kids on the block” have decided to let Kyle Newman helm the project, while Ellen Paige and Paris Berelc have come on board to play the lead roles.
This film will be a one-of-a-kind movie, about e-Sports gaming. In the feature, Berelc’s character decides to quit her college esports team due to the sexism she faces from her male counterparts and teammates. To keep her scholarship, she is forced to create a team of her own, and she decides to create an all-female team – with a female coach joining the squad, to boot. Paige is set to portray the coach, who has had a gaming scandal in the past.
This film is very important for two aspects. The first being – this movie will feature Paige – a global megastar, and her participation in this film will highlight real issues faced by women and young female gamers (today) in the budding eSports community (and hopefully will draw parallels in other single-sex-dominated working fields as well). The second aspect is the global spread of a new wave of sports genre. Most esports films haven’t made a mark in the global stage as of yet, and with an excellent crew backing Buzzfeed with Paige being one of the leads in the film, this film can break down a lot of stereotypes as well as provide good promotion about eSports, to the rest of the world.
Julia Yorks has penned the script for this feature, with the film set to go into production in Toronto next month (November). BuzzFeed’s Richard Alan Reid is going to be producing the movie along with Michael Philip and Jason Moring.
