The extended look trailer of Yorgos Lanthimos’ Poor Things trailer is different from all the other clips that have been released by Searchlight Pictures. The clip perfectly balances its eeriness with its offbeat humour, largely thanks to the mesmerising presence of the leading lady, Emma Stone.
Based on Alasdair Gray’s 1992 novel, Poor Things is a tale of a young woman, Bella, who gets a new life from her guardian, Dr. Godwin Baxter (Willem Dafoe), a talented scientist with a disfigured face. As she learns about the world, Bella’s desire to explore the entire globe starts to grow. She runs off with Mark Ruffalo’s Duncan Wedderburn, a clever lawyer, to visit all continents. Soon, Bella starts understanding the significance of gender equality and liberation.
The upcoming Emma Stone starrer premiered at this year’s Venice International Film Festival in September and opened to critical acclaim. Critics highly praised Lanthimos’ direction and the cast’s performances, particularly Stone’s. The film also received praise for its wildly imaginative yet mesmerising tone.
Poor Things has a score of ‘fresh’ 99% on Rotten Tomatoes, based on 68 reviews.
Led by Emma Stone, Poor Things will come out in theatres on December 8. Stay tuned for more updates.
