Emma Stone To Officially Star In Yorgos Lanthimos’ ‘Bugonia’

Focus Features has confirmed the casting of Emma Stone and Jesse Plemons in Yorgos Lanthimos’ Bugonia, the remake of the hit South Korean sci-fi comedy, Save the Green Planet. The trio is currently in Cannes for their competition film, Kinds of Kindness, which had its world premiere on May 17 (Friday).

Bugonia will be Stone’s fourth collaboration with Lanthimos, after The Favourite (2018), Poor Things (2023), and Kinds of Kindness, slated to arrive in theatres globally on June 21, 2024. Focus Features will take care of the domestic (Canada and the United States) distribution rights of ‘Bugonia’. Whereas Universal Pictures will handle its international distribution.

‘Bugonia’ is Focus Features’ second deal at the ongoing Cannes Film Festival, after securing the domestic distribution of ‘Last Breath’, starring Woody Harrelson.

Lanthimos’ remake of the 2003 hit South Korean sci-fi comedy, Save the Green Planet, will follow two young men who strongly believe in conspiracy theories. One of their conspiracy theories forces them to kidnap a prominent CEO of a major company, as they become convinced that she is an alien who wants to destroy Earth and wreak havoc on all human beings.

Apart from leading ‘Bugonia’, Emma Stone will also serve as one of the co-producers for the film, via her Fruit Tree production banner. Andrew Lowe and Ed Guiney will produce through their banner of Element Pictures. Square Peg’s Lars Knudsen and Ari Aster will also do the same. The film is yet to receive a release window.
