This year’s summer box office saw a major drought in terms of numbers. Though Bad Boys 4 brought a rain of relief, Inside Out 2 might be the monsoon people were expecting. Furiosa became a failure, but Bad Boys 4 left a remarkable mark at the box office.
Now, it’s Inside Out 2 which signals that Pixar is back in the market.
Yesterday, the film was released and reached $60M on its debut, excluding the $13M from its early release on the 14th. This not only marks the second-best opening for an animated film ever, but it also promises the strongest domestic opening of the year so far.
After this strong opening, the box office projections have changed drastically. Previously, it was expected to have an opening of $135M worldwide, but it now jumps to $145M. Though it’s still far from Godzilla X Kong, the numbers are definitely lucrative.
Besides this, Pixar will benefit from a nostalgia boost along with word of mouth, which must be a formula for success. Animation is far from being dead, Pixar is far from being dead, and Inside Out 2 is definitely something special for the studio.
