Exploitation By Studio Continues As They Fight With SAG-AFTRA On AI

The complexities between SAG-AFTRA and the Studios are reaching an all-time high as AI emerges as the prime concern for both parties. A few weeks ago, a deal seemed near completion, but certain aspects were kept in ultimate darkness by the studios, preventing both parties from shaking hands.

This time, the studios’ claim regarding AI appears even more absurd.

SAG-AFTRA opposes the studios’ AI clause in the final offer. The Alliance aims to implement AI scans for high-earning Schedule F performers. The proposed clause mandates payment for likeness scans of actors like George Clooney and Ellen Pompeo. SAG-AFTRA insists on compensation and performer consent for the reuse of AI scans. The AMPTP offer allows the use of scans of deceased actors without consent from their estate or SAG-AFTRA.

A source from the union side conveyed that the rejection of the AMPTP’s ‘last, best and final’ offer was primarily due to the objectionable language. They emphasized the substantial importance of this matter, pointing out that actors across different tiers, including A-listers, need to realize the seriousness of the situation.

Over the weekend, SAG-AFTRA formulated a counteroffer and has now sent the ball to AMPTP’s court. A meeting between both parties was scheduled for Monday, as the former party aims to appeal for some basic changes to the contract.

SAG-AFTRA aims to establish compensation for the reuse of AI scans, while also requiring AMPTP member companies to obtain performer consent. However, the current language in AMPTP’s offer grants studios and streamers the right to use scans of deceased performers without consent from their estate or SAG-AFTRA.

This part of the deal appears to be an exploitation by the studios, as a one-time payment seems no less than an act of absurdity. The right of unlimited usage of any type of AI scan will likely be misused by the studios, and SAG-AFTRA continues to battle it out.
