NeeStream, ManoramaMax and Prime Reels – these are the three main Malayalam OTTs which are being run in Kerala, India and any other country which has a population of Malayalis or Malayalam watching viewers. All three OTTs are not as good as other regional Indian OTTS, especially when it comes to user interface and product design. But due to the brilliant content that seems to be coming out of these OTTs, most users do not mind the interface and rather prefer these streaming platforms due to its quality movies (and TV shows). Now, another Malayalam OTT is releasing this year, with an announcement about the streaming platform to be made online tomorrow, which will be made by Malayalam superstar Fahadh Faasil, on 3rd March 2021 at 7pm IST, who will tell us about its name as well as its logo.
Now, four OTT platforms for just one language, especially a language which is not predominant outside of one state is going to be a hard sell for any investor, but there are some reasons why it is not a bad idea. Films like the Great Indian Kitchen and Vaanku were dismissed by OTT giants such as Netflix and Amazon Prime Video and the production houses had no choice but to drop it in a regional OTT. But both films have become huge successes and have shown that big names are not needed for Mollywood films to be good.
Also, thanks to the pandemic, multiple big-budgeted movies from 2020 are yet to be screened, and their producers want to release the movies in theaters so as to recuperate their losses (OTTs will not give them the numbers, theaters can provide). So this will leave many small to medium budget films stuck in limbo, with no theaters willing to run these movies, due to the lack of a major superstar, or an item song.
This is where these regional OTTs come into play. Due to the demand of Malayalam movies, be it big budget or small, many will watch it if the film is made well. These regional OTTs will take the Malayalam movies and stream them, as most OTT giants also have similar demands as made by theaters.
Check out the OTT announcement tomorrow, 3rd March 2021, at 7pm.
