As the release date looms for Jeethu Joseph’s Drishyam 2, more news about its potential theatrical release have started to pour in. The Mohanlal starrer is all to set for a direct to OTT release on Amazon Prime Video and will be arriving on 19th February 2021. Although the fans were disappointed for the omission of the theatres, the makers of the movie didn’t hold the idea back of releasing the movie in theatres.
Recently, Mohanlal hosted an #AskMohanlal session on Twitter where he answered a question regarding the possible theatrical release of Drishyam 2 after it goes to its OTT run. Mohanlal said “Possibly”, which meant that the makers too were eyeing the similar idea to release the movie in theatres after it’s OTT premiere.
The news spread like a wildfire, and it seems that this reached the higher officials who now have come to spoil the party of the fans. The Kerala Film Chambers has announced that Drishyam 2 will not be given the permission to get a release in theatres. Those of who are not familiar with the OTT vs Theatres debate we had during the whole last year, Theatres opposed the producers’ decision to release their movies directly on OTT.
And hence, with a platform being set already for Drishyam 2, the officials have decided that the movie should release the way it was announced and even after it’s OTT premiere the movie wouldn’t be allowed to screen in theatres.
Apart from this, a preview screening has been done by the makers from where people are sharing their honest responses of the movie. Many people are calling it to be a worthy successor of Drishyam (2013) and several of them are terming it as a huge loss for the theatres.
If these reports turn out to be true on 19th February, then surely it will be one of the top most losses of the theatres who had a brilliant chance to churn out a fortune from the popularity of the movie franchise as well as the actors.
