‘Mahanagar’ came out in 1963 and was adapted from a short story by Narendranath Mitra. It had Madhabi Mukherjee in the leading role and also marked the debut of Jaya Bachchan (Jaya Bhaduri then). ‘Mahanagar’ is the story of a housewife named Arati who disconcerts the family of her in-laws when she starts a job as a saleswoman. But soon her husband loses his job and Arati becomes the only earning member of the family and the perspective of the family changes drastically.
