Though Telugu web series content was quick to take off with the evolution of digital streaming platforms, surprisingly nothing noteworthy or pathbreaking has come out of the Telugu entertainment industry, including the likes of Pill-a by Pavan Sadineni, Gangsters, Mana Mugguri Love Story helmed by popular director like Nandini Reddy et al. However, among all platforms, Zee 5 has been the one to do a decent job in consistently producing Telugu content. So when their announcement of a series with actress Amala Akkineni titled High Priestess was out in the news, there was bound to be excitement.
Leading up to its release on April 25, the promos of the series, where the veteran actress plays a psychic and a tarot reader, have lived up to the hype. The series, directed by filmmaker Pushpa Ignatius, appears to be a supernatural thriller with an impressive star cast featuring Brahmaji, Sunaina, Krishna among others in significant roles and has decent production values from what the promos have to say.
Talking about the series in an interview, Amala had said, “I wasn’t really keen on taking up acting offers. But when Pushpa came up with this role, I couldn’t let this one pass. This is the kind of content that’ll absolutely suit the web series format. I am excited to know what the audiences feel about it.” Looks like, with High Priestess, we finally may have a new age web series in Telugu with a wider appeal. And for many veteran actors who can’t take up lead roles in commercial films, the medium has become a blessing of sorts.
