Finally, Thug Life Takes Inspiration From Bollywood

Kamal Haasan’s much-awaited film Thug Life, directed by the legendary Mani Ratnam, is all set to hit theatres on June 5. The movie is highly awaited as we are finally getting the duo of Ratnam and Haasan back. After Ponniyin Selvan, the director has taken a completely different route and we are not sure how well it is going to be received.

Kamal Haasan recently confirmed that Thug Life will follow an eight-week window before it releases on OTT platforms. This means the movie will be available to stream only after it completes a full two months in theatres.

Now, this might not sound like a big deal to some, but it truly is. Unlike Bollywood movies, South Indian films come to OTT just four weeks after their theatrical release. Because of that, many people skip going to the cinema and just wait to watch it at home. This has been hurting theatre collections for a long time. But Mani Ratnam’s influence and vision seem to have changed the game with Thug Life. This eight-week gap gives theatres the breathing space they badly need and helps the movie run longer on the big screen.

Kamal Haasan called this move a “game-changer,” and rightly so. It sets a great example for other filmmakers in the South. If more films follow this path, it could revive the theatre-going habit and bring back the excitement of watching movies on the big screen. With music by A.R. Rahman and a powerful story, Thug Life is shaping up to be a big moment not just for fans, but for the future of South Indian cinema.
