Netflix is all set to stream a new Broadway show ‘Diana: A Musical’ in early 2021, before its début in theater as confirmed by its Los Gatos based production company. The show had already started its preview at the Broadway theater in March but the pandemic imposed restrictions delayed its opening in theater, which is now scheduled for May 2021.
This new musical show about the British Princess will be shot in Longacre Theater with no audience and will feature the original Broadway cast including Jeanna de Waal as Diana, Roe Hartrampf as Prince Charles, Erin Davie as Camilla Parker Bowles and Judy Kaye as Queen Elizabeth.
Netflix’s move to have a big Broadway show on the platform comes after the highly successful streaming of ‘Hamilton’ on Disney+. With this the platform is probably trying to attract a totally new and different category of customers to the platform. It also marks as a step towards diversifying the content catalogue on the platform.
When it comes to having theater shows on the platform, this isn’t the first time for Netflix, earlier John Mulaney and Nick Kroll’s ‘Oh, Hello’, Bruce Springsteen’s Broadway show ‘Mike Birbiglia: The New One’ and an adaptation of American Son with the original Broadway cast have already streamed on the platform.
