As mentioned in our January article titled “Netflix, Amazon Prime Rejected Film The Great Indian Kitchen Praised For Brilliance!” – OTT giants Amazon Prime Video and Netflix rejected the now-brilliant Malayalam family drama ‘The Great Indian Kitchen’. The film eventually went on to stream in a relatively unknown regional OTT platform – Neestream. This move turned out to be a blessing in disguise (for both), as the movie went on to get great reviews and thanks to word-of-mouth (both online and “offline”), ‘The Great Indian Kitchen’ went on to become January 2021’s best Malayalam release. This put Neestream on the map and made Amazon Prime change their mind about their rejection of the film.
Amazon Prime has been doing well in the regional and Indian OTT content over the past year with brilliant films like ‘C U Soon’, ‘Putham Pudhu Kaalai’, ‘Drishyam 2’ – to just name a few. But their easy access to ‘The Great Indian Kitchen’ and their eventual rejection after watching the movie has been considered one of their bigger blunders regarding regional content in 2021. But at least, Amazon Prime Video is amending their mistake. There has been no news from the Netflix camp, but then again, that is no surprise. They haven’t been as hot as Amazon Prime Video when it comes to creating good Indian and regional language content in recent times, and we won’t be surprised if Netflix will never mention ‘The Great Indian Kitchen’ again. Netflix is creating and producing their own regional content (including Malayalam projects) now though, so we can’t say they are dead in the water yet. We will just have to wait and see as they premiere on the OTT platform.
But for now, if anyone wants to see ‘The Great Indian Kitchen’ in a more UI friendly environment, then stream the movie on Amazon Prime Video, which has been streaming since today morning. It is also available for streaming on Neestream as well.
