With Joss Whedon’s ‘Justice League’ (and yes it is Whedon’s, calling it part of Snyder’s story is sacrilegious) coming out in theaters back in 2017 which was hated by critics and fans alike, it seemed like Warner Bros. had just shot themselves in the foot and the end for DC was near. But after three somewhat quiet years, two decently successful movies (Shazam and Aquaman) and a booming television DC universe later, the future doesn’t look as bleak for DC. In fact, fans of DC are starting to hope for a better team-up movie and it all looks ready to begin with ‘The Flash’.
Don’t get us wrong, we didn’t forget about Wonder Woman. The only movie which gave DC fans hope regarding the ‘Justice League’ (JL) movie was that incredible movie, but that hope quickly got crushed after the neon orange cinematography of Whedon (We are not hating on Whedon, he is a talented director, but JL as a catastrophe). But after many long plans were scrapped (except for the Wonder Woman movies of course), there was no light for years for DC fans; that the actors would return for the role. In fact Henry Cavill and Ben Affleck had enough of playing Superman and Batman respectively for the current company, especially after how ‘JL’ turned out. But something has been brewing for a year now.
Ezra Miller, the actor who played Flash in the movies turned up in a Flash episode (during a crisis event) in the CW series at the end of last year, thereby for the first time connecting both the television and film universes together, which not even Marvel has done. This opened up the possibility for a team-up (if they ever planned on it) between the two cinematic universes. Compared to Marvel, DC was doing extremely well (and still is) when it came to their television shows (except for Netflix’s Daredevil; that should be immortalized as a stand-alone three season masterpiece). So when Ezra Miller turned up in the episode, it gained a lot of traction.
This led to more traction for other DC projects. Unfortunately ‘Wonder Woman 1984’, is still on hold due to the mass-pandemic, but hopefully we will get another brilliant Gal Gadot performance. But that was not it. There had been rumors regarding Snyder-cut version of Justice League for a year now and last month Jack Snyder himself announced it that it is in the works and will come out next year, along with ‘The Rock’s’ Black Adam, The re-vamped ‘Suicide Squad’ among others. This announcement blew up on many social media platforms and even some Marvel fans were excited to watch some different type of Superhero films.
As part of a five-episode crossover between Flash, Arrow, Batwoman, Supergirl and Legends of Tomorrow, we saw the cameos of multiple actors who had played different DC heroes like the aforementioned Ezra Miller as Flash, but also Tom Welling who played Superman in ‘Smallville’, Kevin Conray as Batman (he voiced the animated version of many years), Brandouth Routh from ‘Superman Returns’, even Tom Ellis as Lucifer Morningstar, among many others. These cameos excited a lot of DC fans and the buzz hasn’t died down even a year later.
And finally now, The Flash is planning on repeating this phenomenon by re-creating the infamous “Flashpoint” story-line and he is expected to meet multiple versions of himself and Batman. Ben Affleck has been convinced to return and portray the caped crusader once more as well as Micheal Keaton who came in the 1989 ‘Batman’ as the titular character has been signed on. It is even expected that Grant Gustin, the actor who plays Flash in the CW series, will appear in the movie as well.
And early this morning, we got more rumors that Nicholas Cage, George Clooney and Val Kilmer could cameo as well. Nicholas Cage was supposed to be Superman in the 1990 version of ‘Superman Lives’, which later got scrapped, while Val Kilmer and George Clooney played Batman in 1995 and 1997 respectively. Even Henry Cavill has been reported to have agreed to come on board as Superman among other possible cameos and we just can’t keep up with all that is happening right now. All we know now is that it is ‘full-steam ahead’ for Warner Bros. and we can’t wait for 2022, to see what ‘The Flash’ has in store for us.
